A Night of Women Composers

March 29 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

WTMA Teachers Kat Skafidas and Kyle Seniw, who co-direct the music activities at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, are presenting A Night of Women Composers, featuring Margaret Bonds’ Simon Bore the Cross.

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church is thrilled to announce our Good Friday Concert presented by our Music Ministry: A Night of Women Composers, featuring Margaret Bonds’ sacred cantata Simon Bore the Cross. The concert will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 112 Randolph Ave, on March 29 at 7:00 PM. Free to attend; we are accepting at-will offerings to be donated towards our music program’s growth.

St. Michael’s is excited to bring this concert to the community. Our musical program for the evening consists of women composers who have been marginalized and have worked twice as hard for their works to even be published. In her cantata, Simon Bore the Cross, Margaret Bonds musically sets Langston Hughes’ depiction of Simon of Cyrene, a pagan of African descent, being compelled to help Jesus bear the cross to Calvary during the Crucifixion.

There is a crucial message of hope and bravery in Mary’s solo, “God, keep him strong, and bless his soul, the dark one.” In addition to the Bonds, we will be featuring some shorter works by other female composers across genres and instruments, highlighting Boston-area musicians.

Free Donations gratefully accepted for the music ministry.
