Out of Darkness/We Will Outlive Them

A double bill of two song cycles telling stories from early 20th century Europe.
“Out of Darkness” by Jake Heggie with libretto by Gene Scheer illuminates Nazi persecution of homosexuals by sharing the story of Gad Beck (1923-2012), a gay German-Jew.
“We Will Outlive Them… Letters to Rivka from Galicia,” by WTMA teacher Quinn Gutman, is a song cycle world premiere for soprano Jessica Bloch and pianist Rafe Schaberg. The contents of the cycle includes letters from the Zeider family living in Galicia (~1925-1948), to their family member in America, Rivka Teitel. The song is titled in honor of the cry of Jewish resilience during the Holocaust: “We will outlive them”.
